OVERVIEW: Jerry Senser and family move their philanthropy through the Senser Foundation. The family's philanthropy strongly focuses on Chicagoland. JEWISH CAUSES: The Sensers' largest sums of late via their foundation have been directed towards Jewish organizations. Grantees have included American Israel Education Foundation, Friends of ELNET, and Am Yisrael, a congregation in Northfield, Illinois. The family has more modestly supported places like American Friends of Hebrew University, American Jewish Committee, Hillel, and US Holocaust Museum. Senser's wife Naomi studied at the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, and the couple's son served as an overseas volunteer for Magen David Adom, Israel's national organization for blood, ambulance, and emergency services.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees have included AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Greater Chicago Food Depository, American Red Cross, American Tinnitus Association, and A Safe Place, which provides shelters and services. By the way, Naomi Senser has an M.D.

On the policy front, Senser Foundation grantees have included Foundation for Defense of Democracy, Middle East Media and Research Institute, and The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. In the arts, the Sensers have supported places like Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

LOOKING FORWARD: It's tough to tell if the Senser Foundation's grantmaking will ramp up in the coming years, but expect Jewish causes to remain a top interest of this Chicago area family.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Arts and culture organizations make up a significant chunk of the Royce Family Fund's annual grantees. The forces here in part involve Royce's wife, Deborah Goodrich Royce, a longtime actress and filmmaker on both coasts who once worked as a story editor for Miramax. The family of late has given especially strong support to National Trust For Historic Preservation, Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust, and Hunter Foundation, a nonprofit focused on "restoring the historical buildings, cultural offerings and economic health" in the Catskill region—another region, by the way, that's an important site of giving.

RELIGIOUS: The family recently gifted over $1 million to Christ Church Greenwich. Other grantees have included Episcopal Church Foundation, First Presbyterian Church, St. Paul's Theological Centre, and Forward Movement, "an official, non-profit agency of the Episcopal Church whose mission is to create compelling content for Christian living."

They've also supported organizations like Send A Cow, which gives "direct, practical help to poor farmers in East Africa." It's worth noting that Royce's former wife, Joyce, is a director of the Endupoto Primary School for Maasai children in Tanzania.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Royce family is operating a robust philanthropic operation. Expect this to continue in the coming years.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Sandlers strongly support their shared alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Sandler is a board member of the University of Wisconsin Foundation. Riverdale Country School in the Bronx also recently received a large grant from the family. Other grantees have included Columbia University (Mara attended Teacher's College), East Harlem Little League, Teach for America, Harlem Village Academies, Streetquash, The IDEAL School of Manhattan, and A BroaderWay Foundation (ABW), a charity founded by Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel that "offers girls from urban communities an outlet for self-expression and creativity through arts-centered programs."

JEWISH CAUSES: Jewish organizations are heavily featured in the foundation's grantmaking. A particularly big winner has been UJA Federation. Other grantees have included Facing History and Ourselves, ADL, American Jewish Committee, Hillel (including its University of Wisconsin chapter), Israel Cancer Research Fund, Israel Tennis Centers, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

HUMAN SERVICES & HEALTH: Mara Sandler is a board member of Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and CASAColumbia, which the family support through their foundation. Mara also serves as first chair of Ovarian Cancer Research's Woman to Woman Program, a "unique support program that pairs gynecologic cancer patients with trained survivor volunteers who provide one-on-one emotional support and mentoring to women when they need it most." It's safe to say that cancer is of interest to this family.

The Sandlers have also given particularly large sums to Mount Sinai Health System. Other grantees have included Citymeals-on-Wheels, FARE, Nev York-Presbyterian Fund, and Southampton Hospital Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Sandler is only in his 40s and very much still engaged in business, but his foundation has been around since last decade. Mara Sandler's various board memberships are something to watch carefully in the coming years.

Brian and Adria Sheth

$

0

NET WORTH: $1.1 billion

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Vista Equity Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Children, Conservation

OVERVIEW: Brian Sheth and his wife Adria move their philanthropy through the Sangreal Foundation, which supports select nonprofits through its children and conservation initiatives. The Sheths strongly support their alma mater UPenn, as well as other schools and youth organizations. On the environmental front, Sheth serves as chairman of Global Wildlife Conservation, which the family heavily helps fund. The Sangreal foundation has a website, though it lacks clear information about the application process

BACKGROUND: Brian Sheth received a B.S. in economics from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Sheth worked in the mergers and acquisitions groups at Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Morgan Grenfell. He also worked at Bain Capital, where he focused on leveraged buyouts of technology companies. In 2000, he cofounded Vista Equity Partners with Robert F. Smith and is the firm's president.

ISSUES:

CHILDREN: Within this grantmaking category, the Sangreal Foundation supports a range of educational and youth organizations, and states that by "supporting groups that do everything from preparing American students for college to building new schools in Africa, the Sangreal Foundation is helping children around the world prepare for full, healthy lives as members of our global community."

The Sheths steadily support their mutual alma mater, UPenn. Some of this work has involved athletics, specifically track and field. Adria was a Penn track athlete and the Sheths a few years back gave $1 million to endow the Betty J. Costanza Women’s Track & Field coaching position, the first time a women’s varsity coaching position at Penn was endowed in a woman’s name.

Away from their alma mater, the Sheths via Sangreal have supported St. Stephen’s Episcopal School Emerging Scholars Fund (Sheth's own college tuition was covered by full financial aid); Helping Hand Home for Children; Austin Children’s Shelter; and Breakthrough Austin, among other efforts. The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles is also an important site of philanthropy, and the recipient of millions. Sangreal funds Saving the Planet with Song, an initiative whose first phase in partnership with the GRAMMY Museum and The Recording Academy "utilizes the core concepts of music to teach children, at the elementary, middle and high school levels, throughout the United States about the importance of conservation and the critical role that biodiversity plays in all of our lives."

On the international front, Sangreal has supported the Miracle Foundation, an organization that helps India’s orphans. Sheth is the son of an Indian immigrant.

CONSERVATION: The Foundation's conservation grantmaking category, meanwhile, supports "environmental efforts that strive to repair the damage that has already been done to our earth, and to protect all inhabitants of our world, giving our global community a brighter tomorrow." Sheth serves as chairman of the board of Global Wildlife Conservation, which the family strongly supports. Other grantees include Fundaeco; ProAves, which focuses on the study and conservation of Colombian biodiversity; and Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

LOOKING FORWARD: Sheth is barely into his 40s and still very much engaged in business. But this billionaire family should be watched for greater giving down the line. Despite their Austin base, the couple's grantmaking already touches regions in several parts of the country and the world.
